However, the occupants of these cars still had to utilize keys to open and close their doors. Renault engineers realized that this was a significant problem for many.
They decided to incorporate a contactless card in their vehicles, and develop a system which would allow drivers to open and start their cars by simply shaking their hands. The hands-free card first appeared in 2001, in the Laguna II saloon. This car was designed to be the lifestyle car of the 21st century. Renault could not test all possible uses despite an extensive design brief that was based on over 6,000 interviews with customers.
Bernard Dumondel was the product leader of Laguna II at the time. He used his hotel room keys to unlock his car. He was of the opinion that a car key could be made with the same magnetic strip as the key.
In the years following the card was hailed as an innovative technology and is now offered on two of three Renault vehicles. While smartphones seem to be in the process of replacing it, Renault has chosen to utilize these new technologies without letting the hands-free card fall off the radar.
The keyless entry system
The hands-free card of Renault was an innovative piece of technology at its launch 20 years ago. The exterior of the card is identical however the technology has been upgraded to make it easier to use and less vulnerable to hacking.
First of all, it cannot be used to unlock the doors or start the engine from outside the vehicle unless it is activated by the driver. The reason is that the radio signal antennas "around" the car are set up to determine if the key is outside or inside. The key will continue to turn the ignition from a distance, but it will not open the doors. This is to ensure your safety.
The second is that the wireless remote control transmissions used by the system use a rolling-code. This reduces the likelihood of someone stealing the control message and then retransmitting it in order to gain access, but doesn't completely eliminate it. [1]
